Mentoring for Schools

Trying to engage with education when you are experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties is a big ask. Yet there are so many young people across the region who are expected to do just that. When they struggle to focus in lessons, or can’t self-regulate their emotions in the classroom, education becomes just one more thing in that young person’s life that is ‘against them’. These are the hard-to-reach young people we are passionate about working with.

‘’87% of pupils on our mentoring programme are currently engaging with some form of education, training or employment’’

An individualised package of support for each young person

Our Challenging Me mentoring programme is a holistic, dynamic series of targeted support mechanisms and interventions that helps to promote growth and positive wellbeing. We work with educational settings and any relevant external support services to design an individualised package of support for each young person, ensuring the right kind of support is always available, in the way that will make the most difference for them. Through this bespoke programme, we are able to create a safe, nurturing, non-judgemental space in which our mentors can encourage these young people to recognise and restructure the thoughts and behaviours that are holding them back. We help to tackle the underlying beliefs these young people have about themselves and the world around them. We encourage them to reflect on the relationships that have shaped them, and we support them to become more confident and resilient.

We help to tackle the underlying beliefs these young people have about themselves and the world around them.

We encourage them to reflect on the relationships that have shaped them, and we support them to become more confident and resilient. It is a sad fact that young people who struggle to engage with education are more vulnerable to drug and alcohol use, exploitation, knife crime, gang affiliation, criminality and prison. The Challenging Me programme for schools aims to support these young people to re-engage before the situation becomes critical. Wherever possible, we want to keep these young people in school. We want them to flourish there and for the classroom to be a safe, happy and nurturing place for everyone.

‘Drawing on their own experiences, our mentors are able to encourage these young people to create a change in their own lives’

The benefits of working with us

Our mentors have been where these young people are; they have faced the same challenges and, with grit and determination, have made it to the other side. Drawing on their own experiences, our mentors are able to encourage these young people to create a change in their own lives. By giving space, time and importance to past experiences and relationships, we help to empower these young people to start making decisions for themselves, and to open the door to a bright future.

EMPOWERMENT
We help to empower the young person to make positive, sustainable change.

ENGAGEMENT
We help to reduce conflict and increase engagement in the setting.

CONFIDENCE
We help to build more confident, resilient members of the school community.

RESULTS
Through targeted, individualised support we drive meaningful results.

Case Study

The Oakfield School

TP was referred to our service because he was struggling with social, emotional and behavioural issues which were presenting as violence and aggression towards staff and other pupils. TP had completely disengaged from school following an incident and was not actively participating in any form of education.
